A man was killed Saturday after an MBTA Commuter Rail train struck his vehicle while it crossed tracks at the Beachwood Street crossing in Cohasset, according to local authorities.
Cohasset Police Chief William Quigley said a call came in around 11:20 a.m. for a train striking a vehicle. Just before the call came in, the MBTA said the Greenbush Line Train would end service at North Scituate because of police activity.
Quigley said the crossing lane equipment appeared to be functioning properly, but that the intersection was in a “no whistle zone,” an area where trains do not sound horns and whistles at certain crossings.
“The trains on the Greenbush Line do not use the horn unless they see something on the right-of-way, so that’ll be part of the investigation as well. But, as you can probably hear in the background, the bells and lights are working, the gates are functioning properly,” Quigley said.
Quigley said there were about 40 people on the train.
“The train is always going to win, and even if the gates are up, I still look. I slow down and look. There’s a pretty clear line of view here. But unfortunately, that didn’t happen today,” Quigley told reporters.
Local authorities did not identify the man who died.
Quigley said there have been four deaths in Cohasset in the past four years as a result of vehicles and trains colliding, two of which happened within the past month.
