A Lynn woman died in a New Hampshire river on Tuesday after she tried to help her child who had slipped into Franconia Falls.
Melissa Bagley, 44, the wife of an Everett Police lieutenant, drowned following the incident in the White Mountain National Forest on Tuesday afternoon.
“The Everett Police Department is sad to report the sudden passing of Melissa Bagley 44 yrs of age, wife of Lt. Sean Bagley who died during a family outing along the river in the White Mountain area yesterday afternoon,” Everett Police wrote on Wednesday.
New Hampshire State Police Marine Patrol at around 3:56 p.m., received a call for a person trapped and a medical emergency at Franconia Falls.
Marine Patrol, New Hampshire Fish and Game, Lincoln Fire Rescue, Lincoln Police and Linwood Ambulance responded to the scene.
Police learned that a family of five from Lynn and a friend from Salem had hiked to Franconia Falls.
While at the falls, the family’s 10-year-old son fell into the water — requiring other family members to enter the pools to help the child. The family was able to rescue the 10-year-old boy, but two other family members became trapped in the rocks and current.
Melissa Bagley was one of the two other family members who became trapped. She was found in the water below the falls and despite resuscitation efforts by family members, she was pronounced dead.
The other trapped family member, an 18-year-old male, was freed from the water. He sustained injuries and was transported to Littleton Hospital.
This is an ongoing investigation, but alcohol and drugs do not appear to be a factor, according to New Hampshire State Police.
Marine Patrol is asking anyone who witnessed the incident or has more details to contact New Hampshire State Police Marine Patrol Sergeant Joshua Dirth at 603-227-2115 or Joshua.E.Dirth@dos.nh.gov, or call State Police dispatch at 603-846-3333.
