Authorities are investigating a single car crash that killed a 19-year-old Lynn man on Route 128 in Manchester-by-the-Sea on Tuesday.
Preliminary findings suggest the driver of the car, a 2009 Honda Civic, “veered off the road to the right and rolled into the wood line,” Massachusetts State Police Spokesman Dave Procopio said in a statement.
Emergency personnel declared the 19-year-old dead after arriving on scene at mile marker 51 on Route 128 north around 7:20 a.m. A second occupant, a 26-year-old man from Florida, was taken via medical helicopter to a Boston hospital for treatment of what Procopio called “life-threatening injuries.”
In an update Tuesday evening, Procopio said it is believed that the second occupant resides in Lynn though he has a Florida address.
The early morning crash closed both sides of Route 128 to allow Medflight to land and transport the surviving victim before the scene cleared around 9 a.m.
The crash remains under investigation by Troop A of the Massachusetts State Police, the State Police Detective Unit assigned to the Essex County District Attorney’s Office, the State Police Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Section, and the State Police Crime Scene Services Section.
