DUXBURY – Every single year, the Players Cup just seems to intensify with bigger schools joining the competition.
Yet, BC High has managed to make it a perennial playoff tuneup. Union College commit Luke Allen sniped four goals Saturday, as the Eagles (8-0) clinched their third title in the showcase since 2022 with a 10-6 boys lacrosse victory over Duxbur.
“I think the competition is getting better and better,” Eagles coach Marcus Craigwell said. “So it’s harder to finish the job, but we were expecting that. Duxbury gave us a great game, defensively, offensively, their goalie played well. We just had to keep executing our system. We knew some shots would start to fall if we just maintained our composure.”
Due to the tournament’s parameters, Duxbury (9-3) served as the in-season showcase’s championship site. Given how things played out, the Dragons served as a de facto home team, playing against a squad most would consider to be one of the top two in Massachusetts.
“I think it was just about staying calm,” said Allen. “Just keep on pushing through. We know that shots are going to fall and we normally come out hot, but we know the defense has our back. We just kept on pushing.”
Early on, it appeared the schools were going to be in for a barn-burner, as Nick Emsing gave the Eagles an early 1-0 lead. Just 1:01 later, Johnny Annis netted the equalizer for Duxbury to even things at 1-all.
With 2:43 to go in the opening frame, Allen caught a pass from Emsing, and slid a shot into the cage to put BC High back in front.
“My teammates put me in great opportunities to make a play,” Allen said. “I just credit the rest of the offense. We work hard everyday in practice to go through plays, and to master our craft.”
The Eagles were just beginning to take flight. Shortly thereafter, Murphy Belvin sniped his first goal, before Allen notched his second to give the Eagles a 4-1 lead.
With 10:47 left in the second quarter, Allen registered his third goal to complete the hat trick, and BC High was off and running with a 5-1 advantage. From that point forward, the Eagles cruised in the latter half.
Emsing recorded a pair of goals for BC High as well, as did Murphy Belvin. Jacob Adams and Charlie Clair added the other two goals for the Eagles.
In addition to Annis’ tally, Duxbury received a two-goal performance from Brady Rhinesmith, with scores also coming from Johnny Annis, Jack Sovik, Cam Silvia and Liam Goodwin.
For now, the local dynasty continues for BC High. Though, things don’t get much easier. Next up, a tilt with St. John’s Prep awaits the Eagles.
“I think everyone is just focused on the guys in the locker room,” Craigwell said. “Things are going to happen that are out of our control, and we understand that. I think our guys are really dialed in on getting each other better, which is important. That is why we are successful. Everyone is super dialed in at practice, and everyone wants to get better.”
