NextImg:Luis Severino dominates, Billy McKinney homers as Yankees even series with Rangers in 1-0 win

Luis Severino flashed his dominant self on Saturday afternoon.

The Yankees’ right-hander bounced back in a big way in their 1-0 win over the Rangers to even up the three-game series. Severino tossed six shutout innings allowing five hits while striking out four.

It was exactly what the doctor ordered for the 29-year-old who entered the afternoon with a 6.30 ERA on the season. The Bombers needed every bit of Severino’s performance as their bats continue to lay dormant in the absence of Aaron Judge.

The only offense came off the bat of Billy McKinney who blasted a solo homer in the bottom of the fourth. The outfielder has been one of the very few contributors at the dish during the Yanks’ recent struggles.

The left-handed hitter is slashing .320/.346/.660 with four homers in 15 games played this season.

The rest of the Bombers’ lineup combined for just three hits, all singles by Giancarlo Stanton, Harrison Bader and Anthony Rizzo.

Aaron Boone’s bullpen was tested being handed a one-run league against arguably one of the best offenses in baseball this season. Tommy Kahnle took over for Severino in the seventh and tossed a perfect frame before handing it over to the struggling Wandy Peralta.

Peralta registered just one out and allowed two to reach before Boone called on Clay Holmes to put out the fire. Ron Marinaccio was on closing duties in the afternoon and didn’t fail to make matters interesting.

Marinaccio allowed the first two batters to reach forcing himself to pitch out of a jam with first and second with nobody out. The 27-year-old immediately struck out Ezequiel Duran and Leody Taveras before getting Marcus Semien to pop out to Gleyber Torres securing the 1-0 victory.

It’ll be a battle of the aces in Sunday’s rubber match with a familiar face taking the ball for Bruce Bochy’s squad. Nathan Eovaldi (2.80 ERA) will go toe-to-toe with Gerrit Cole (2.64 ERA) for the matinee.
