Liam Martin really can’t wait to smash his alarm clock.
The WBZ News morning anchor will no longer be waking up at 2 a.m. every day, as he announced on Friday that he’s leaving the station and TV news.
Martin, who has been with WBZ for almost a decade, called it “bittersweet” to step away.
“It was not an easy decision,” Martin said during Friday’s broadcast, later adding, “I love this team so much. I love this job so much, but it was time for some more work-family balance for me.”
Before joining WBZ in 2015, Martin worked as a general assignment reporter at WCVB. He began his journalism career as a Celtics columnist for NESN.
Martin, who grew up on the South Shore, now lives there with his wife and two children.
“I am really excited about what’s next,” Martin said. “I want to be able to be a full-time dad and focus on that role, full-time husband.”
“Monday morning, Daddy’s gonna be there (home) for breakfast,” he later added.
Martin said he will be working in communications and public relations. That means no more 2 a.m. alarm.
“First thing, I’m going to smash the alarm clock,” he said with a chuckle. “I’m going to take a hammer to the alarm clock. That’ll be the first thing I do.”
His co-anchor Kate Merrill handed him a hammer during his final broadcast on Friday. His colleagues also gifted him with a “Retired Journalist” tank top.
“There is a lot that I’m going to miss about this job,” Martin said. “Most important will be the people… I really love this place. This place is family to me.”
Martin also thanked everyone watching at home.
“This is a bittersweet moment,” he posted on social media. “I’ve decided to leave TV news. WBZ has been incredibly supportive about this decision, though it wasn’t an easy one.
“Thank you to my brilliant news family,” Martin added. “Thank you to WBZ for making a dream come true. And thank you to the viewers.”
