I read in the Herald that the replacement of the long Island Bridge is a topic of discussion again. The article mentioned that the city of Boston wants to go ahead and rebuild the Long Island Bridge from Long Island to the area of Quincy, Ma. My suggestion is, why not just build the bridge from Columbia Point in Boston instead of rebuilding the bridge in the Squantum section of Quincy. Long Island is part of the county of Suffolk and the Squantum section is in Norfolk County. It would be cheaper to build the bridge from Columbia Point than from the section of Quincy. Of course I’m not a politician, so what do I know.

The persistence of antisemitism in our country requires constant vigilance. Some of its eruptions are lethal to Jews, while other spasms of this ancient hatred spark emotional and physical harm. Some practitioners of this bigotry walk the halls of Congress, giving lip service to expressions of comity, and some of the so-called ingenuous dine with them at fabled resorts. Some organize on campuses to spread the hate and others to isolate the blameless. Being alert to this prejudice and all manifestations of discrimination is our duty as members of the American fellowship.

Thanks for your update from the United Nations on the carbon “emissions gap,” (Herald, Nov 20).  We’re still sending much more carbon dioxide into the atmosphere than we should to meet a future global temperature limit of 1.5 degrees C. Instead, we’re heading for a hotter world and more floods, droughts, wildfires and displaced populations.  (As one commentator said, “not a future I think anybody would want for their children and grandchildren.”)

Countries make  pledges to cut back, but meanwhile oil companies like Exxon-Mobil are touting their plans to expand their operations.  Some of these transnational corporations have not yet been shamed into stopping this dangerous behavior, the United Nations has no enforcement capability,  and it appears that not even our federal government can stop them from drilling and fracking for as much oil as they please.

Can it be true that we do not yet have the means to rein in these worst actors?

Democracy is a system of government by the whole population or all the eligible members of a state, typically through elected representatives.

87% of the people want Congress to rescue Social Security and Congress has done nothing.

Over 50% of the people don’t want to buy an electric car and the government says you have to.

Two good examples of how democracy works.
