LEGO is now well on its way to gathering the building blocks for a new Boston headquarters, announcing a planned 1001 Boylston St. location Monday.

“We’re incredibly excited to be moving to a new location with such a rich history, ideally located in Back Bay, between Boston and Cambridge,” said Skip Kodak, President of the LEGO Group in the Americas, in a release Monday. “1001 Boylston Street represents an investment in our future and a commitment to our employees.”

The Back Bay location sits at the intersection of Boylston Street, Massachusetts Avenue and Newbury Street. The building will be comprised of five floors and more than 100,000 square feet, the LEGO Group said.

The company said it is aiming to have the new location open by the second quarter of 2025 and complete its move by the end of 2026, closing the Enfield office.

LEGO initially announced it would move its headquarters from the 47-year location in Enfield Connecticut to Boston in January. The LEGO president stated previously that the company would make a “gradual transition” and offer current employees relocation assistance.

The toy-manufacturer said the relocation will bring “hundreds” of new jobs to the area. The current headquarters employs around 740 full-time workers, the company noted.

The land parcel at 1001 Boylston Street was approved for development by the BPDA in 2021 and is currently listed as under construction. The Samuels & Associates development team proposal notes the project intends to create a “vibrant hub” of approximately 325,000 square feet of office uses, 70,000 square feet of retail and restaurant uses, and 150,000 square feet of residential or hotel uses, as well as 150 parking spaces below.

The company has cited Boston’s business community, academic institutions, skilled workforce and high quality of life in their relocation decision.

“This move aligns with our long-term growth strategy and underscores our commitment to remaining at the forefront of innovation,” said Kodak. “Boston is one of the United States’ most livable cities, with world class arts and leisure activities, education and research partners, and a thriving business community.”

In its release, the company advertised the new location will be “designed with wellbeing, accessibility, and sustainability in mind.”

The location sits close to Orange and Green Line stops and will be “accessible to those walking and cycling,” with BlueBikes available on site, the company said. The site is also designed to “achieve triple Gold certification,” a standard of the building’s environmental impact and sustainability.

The headquarters, using floor 6 through 11, will include views of “Cambridge, the Charles River, and historic Back Bay,” a sky terrace on every other floor, and fitness, wellbeing and parent rooms.

“Our move to 1001 Boylston Street ensures that we can continue our mission to bring LEGO play to even more children in the U.S. and the Americas region,” Kodak said.
