Judge Beverly Cannone convened court shortly after 9 a.m. for a third day of jury deliberations in the Karen Read murder trial.

Read, 44, of Mansfield, is charged with second-degree murder, manslaughter while operating a motor vehicle under the influence and leaving the scene of an accident resulting in death. The second of the indicted charges features two “lesser included charge” options: involuntary manslaughter and motor vehicle homicide. Read can be convicted of or found not guilty of each one.

The verdict slips were amended slightly yesterday following a defense team complaint about the wording and design of the slip for the second indicted charge, manslaughter while operating a motor vehicle under the influence. It has two subordinate charges jurors can consider if they find the prosecution failed to meet the elements of the primary charge. Defense attorney Alan Jackson said that the verdict slip doesn’t allow jurors to check a box marked “not guilty” for the two subordinate charges and it wasn’t clear how jurors were supposed to indicate their real intention.

After a back-and-forth, Cannone later in the day agreed to make the requested changes, which the prosecution did not object to, but ruled there was nothing inappropriate about the earlier slips, the judge added.

The jury, which has been narrowed to a final set of six men and six women, have sat for a total of 30 days of trial, including Tuesday’s closing arguments, in Norfolk Superior Court in Dedham and were handed the case that afternoon.

And, as always, the crowds are outside the court behind the buffer zone with the possibility of the street being closed if there is a verdict today.
