Francisco Torres, the man accused of attempting to open a door on a plane from L.A. 45 minutes before it was scheduled to land in Boston, will undergo a psychological evaluation ahead of any further proceedings against his own wishes.

He’s also accused of trying to stab a flight attendant with a broken metal spoon, hitting the United worker on the neck three times. Passengers then tackled Torres and he was restrained with the help of crew members before he was taken into custody when the flight landed at Boston Logan International Airport Sunday evening.

U.S. District Court Magistrate Judge Judith Dein ordered the psychological evaluation, and a commitment of a minimum of 30 days in an appropriate psychological facility, over Torres’ objection to any such evaluation. She also “strongly” urged him against his wishes to make a statement at his hearing in federal court in Boston’s Seaport Thursday afternoon.

“The God, the Son and the Holy Spirit say that I should,” Torres said from his seat, adding that because such powerful forces wished it, that he must. But, after a quick conference with his attorney, he said that he would leave it up to Dein to make the decision for him to make a statement.

“If it’s up to me then I will defer and not have you make a statement right now,” Dein said, and Torres complied with her wishes.

But after Dein gave her order, which she will issue formally in writing later today, Torres made a statement as he was led out of the courtroom: “I’ve been renamed Balthazar by God. … B.A.L.T.H.A.Z.A.R., Balthazar.”

Balthazar is the name of one of the holy Magi who visited the baby Jesus when he was born in the New Testament of the Bible. While Torres has made multiple statements informed by Abrahamic religions, he has not explicitly stated that this is the person he takes the name from.
