NextImg:Josh Winckowski roughed up in Red Sox 6-1 loss to Phillies

Earlier this week NESN’s Tom Caron relayed a terrific story about Josh Winckowski, who was called to jury duty this week and was able to avoid selection only after explaining that he couldn’t serve because he “has to pitch in Clearwater on Thursday.”

Unfortunately for Winckowski, once on the mound he wasn’t able to help his case for a spot in the starting rotation.

Winckowski got roughed up in the Red Sox 6-1 loss to the Philadelphia Phillies on Thursday, allowing six runs (five earned) over 3.2 innings of work. The right-hander gave up eight hits and a walk while striking out two, and the Phillies sent eight men to the plate in a four-run second inning, which was capped off by an RBI double by Whit Merrifield.

He followed that with a scoreless third and got two quick outs in the fourth, but then Winckowski gave up back-to-back doubles, including an RBI knock by Kyle Schwarber, before Merrifield struck again for an RBI single to end his day.

The Red Sox bullpen fared much better, especially left-hander Chris Murphy, who enjoyed a terrific showing by striking out five over 2.1 scoreless innings. Isaiah Campbell also remained perfect on the spring, throwing another scoreless inning to bring him to six consecutive appearances without allowing a run since joining the Red Sox.

Jamie Westbrook hit a solo home run for the Red Sox in the seventh, and Triston Casas led Boston’s projected starters by going 1 for 2 with a walk and a strikeout.

Garrett Whitlock will take the mound Friday night against the Minnesota Twins, with Brennan Bernardino, Joe Jacques, Greg Weissert and Lucas Luetge scheduled to follow him out of the bullpen. Jordan Balazovic will get the start for the Twins, and first pitch is scheduled for 6:05 p.m. in Fort Myers.
