DARTMOUTH – In the battle of the Spartans, St. Mary’s of Lynn had just enough to take down a tough Bishop Stang team on the road.

A couple timely hits and a well-pitched ballgame was just enough to lift St. Mary’s to a 3-1 win Wednesday afternoon in a Catholic Central League baseball tilt.

“(Bishop Stang) has been hitting the ball all year long, so for us to hold them to one run – that’s very good,” said St. Mary’s coach Derek Dana. “I thought we made a couple of baserunning mistakes that cost us a couple of runs.”

Senior lefty Josh Doney scattered six hits and struck out six throughout the contest and limited the damage to a lone Bishop Stang (9-3) run in the bottom of the sixth as Matt Burt had a delayed steal of home as the throw went to second to try and catch Amir Cartagena.

“(Doney) believes in himself,” Dana said. “He doesn’t give in. He’s going to pitch the way he pitches and most times that is very good for us.”

Doney also stranded three other runners in scoring position with a lot of ground ball outs, including retiring the side on grounders in the seventh with the final out coming back to the hill off the bat of Nolan Donaldson.

After three scoreless frames, St. Mary’s (14-1) was able to tack on two runs in the top of the fourth with junior Micah Hashikawa delivering a two-out RBI single up the middle to score sophomore Rowan Merryman from third to make it 2-0.

“Micah is not an everyday guy, but when he’s in there, he’s making things happen,” said Dana. “Today, he certainly (made things happen) and it’s all hustle. So, he’s very coachable. He does what you ask him to do and I just can be happy for the kid.”

Hashikawa also drove in Merryman in the sixth with an infield hit to shortstop as he just beat out a high throw on a slow roller to push the lead to 3-0.
