The Jets acquired a former Packers quarterback on Thursday afternoon.

Just not the one many have been waiting for.

The Jets and Tim Boyle agreed to a one-year deal, according to a source. NFL Network was the first to report Boyle’s contract with the Jets.

Since entering the NFL as an undrafted free agent out of Eastern Kentucky, Boyle has been a league journeyman. In 2018, Boyle signed with the Packers and became the team’s third-string quarterback behind Aaron Rodgers and then backup DeShone Kizer. He spent three seasons in Green Bay (2018-20).

Then Boyle moved on to another NFC North organization as he signed with the Lions in 2021 and backed up Jared Goff. That year, Boyle started three games in place of Goff and passed for 526 yards, three touchdowns and six interceptions during that span. Boyle was waived by the Lions after final cuts in 2022 but was placed on the team’s practice squad.

The Bears signed Boyle off the Lions’ practice squad late last season and he appeared in one game for Chicago.

Boyle signing with Gang Green is significant for a few reasons.

First, Boyle will be reunited with Jets offensive coordinator Nathaniel Hackett, who held the same position with the Packers from 2019-21. The Jets continue to be in talks to acquire Rodgers as he “intends” to play for the club in 2023.

Boyle will join Zach Wilson, the No. 2 overall pick in the 2021 draft, and Chris Streveler, who was on the team’s practice squad until last season, in Gang Green’s QB room. While Wilson will be the Jets’ No. 2 quarterback, Boyle will provide veteran leadership until the team’s official trade for Rodgers.

The Jets offseason program will begin April 17. It remains to be seen how much longer it will take to complete a trade for Rodgers. In the meantime, Boyle knows Hackett’s offense and can help ease the learning curve of a new offense and offensive coordinator until Rodgers arrives in Florham Park.

It is possible that the Jets carry three quarterbacks on their regular-season roster. Last year, the Jets had Wilson, Joe Flacco and Mike White on their 53-man roster. Flacco, a free agent, remains unsigned, while White signed with the Dolphins last month.
