Jeremy Swayman will get the net Wednesday night in New Jersey as the Bruins try to extend their point streak (3-0-1) to five games against Jack Hughes and a talented young Devils team that is struggling, having lost their last four games.
The B’s will be again be without their top two defenseman, Charlie McAvoy and Hampus Lindholm, but the list of the wounded has grown. Trent Frederic (illness) did not accompany the team on the one-game road trip and Mark Kastelic was placed on injured reserve on Tuesday, dating back to Monday’s game against San Jose.
That calls for Max Jones to return to the B’s lineup for the first time since he took a minus-3 in the B’s lopsided loss in Carolina on Halloween. Jones had missed most of training camp with a groin injury and struggled through four games with the big club, posting 0-0-0 with four minor penalties.
The hope is his time in Providence helped straighten his game out and he can provide a reasonable facsimile to Kastelic’s game on the fourth line.
“With Max, he’s got speed, he’s got size. We’d like to see him use it effectively, especially up ice on the forecheck, try to create some havoc, disrupt their defensemen, get on top of them early with his speed. Just play a direct, hard game for us,” coach Joe Sacco told reporters in Newark.
The B’s will come right back to Boston for another big game (aren’t they all now?) against the Ottawa Senators on Thursday at the Garden. While a back-to-back usually means the goaltending duties will be split, Sacco did not commit to Joonas Korpisalo playing on Thursday.
“We’ll see how the game goes. I don’’t ant to predict anythin just yet,” said Sacco.
The reluctance to name a starter could just be Sacco’s usual hesitance to name his goalie until game day, or could also be a sign of just how tight the race to the playoffs is. The Bruins, Lightning, Senators, Canadiens, Blue Jacket, Rangers and Flyers all between 50 and 53 points in the hunt for wild card spots….
There is no timeline for a Cole Koepke return (head injury) but he did travel and skate with the team.
