NextImg:If a dog is wearing a yellow ribbon, what does it mean?

All dogs are good dogs — that is a fact — but some pups are a little more anxious than others and may not be as receptive to meeting new people or other dogs. Some dog owners opt for medications or special jackets to help manage anxiety, while others may prefer a less invasive method. While managing your dog’s unique needs, it’s helpful to have a visible way to signal to strangers that your dog might be a bit skittish when meeting new people, so they can proceed more carefully. Enter, the yellow ribbon. It’s part of the international Yellow Dog Project and can help others know that your dog isn’t necessarily comfortable with some encounters.

A yellow ribbon tied on a dog’s collar can signify more than just an anxious pup. It can also warn people that a dog is in training to be a service animal, that they have post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) or that they are deaf or blind. It can also mean a dog is up for adoption and as mentioned, it can merely let others know that your dog is on the nervous side.

If you encounter a dog with a red ribbon on its collar, it may mean the dog is aggressive. When meeting any dog you are not familiar with, you should always ask their owner if they are OK meeting new people — that goes double for a dog with a red ribbon on its collar.

If you see a dog with a green ribbon, it likely means the dog is friendly and open to meeting new people and receiving pets. Orange can mean a dog likes humans but not other dogs. White usually signals a dog is deaf or blind and blue can mean a dog is training for service, but yellow can mean that too. Purple is to indicate a dog has allergies and should not be fed random treats without talking to the owner first.
