WOBURN – Thanks to some timely rebounds and an excellent netminder, HPNA is moving on to the Div. 1 state semifinals for the first time.

With a flurry of shots and rebounds leading to three tallies in the second, No. 4 HPNA upended No. 5 Archbishop Williams 3-1 in the Div. 1 quarterfinals at O’Brien Rink Wednesday.

“There’s no way, but to be well at the moment,” said HPNA coach Gary Kane. “(Archbishop Williams) is a really good team that we just beat and the kids are just so excited.”

In the first period, Archbishop Williams (18-3-4) had a 9-4 shot advantage on net and senior Juliana Taylor stood on her head to keep the contest knotted 0-0 after one.

To start the second, HPNA (17-2-5) came out with a fury and eventually finished a rebound on a power play at the 3:29 mark of the frame as senior Quinn Bennett put home a second chance opportunity after a Kendall LaRiviere shot was saved to go up 1-0.

About 2:30 later, junior Mia Kmiec also scored on a rebound as she put a Paige Nottingham shot that was saved into the back of the net to push the lead up to 2-0 at the six-minute mark of the second.

“Those are the kind of goals that we’ve been working on in practice,” Kane said about the first two tallies. “Getting pucks to the net and having all the rebounds.”

HPNA added another as Nottingham buried a chance from above the left faceoff circle to go up 3-0 at the 10:52 mark of the second. This came right after a huge sliding save for Taylor.

“I don’t know how (Taylor) made some of the saves she made tonight,” said Kane about the seniors’ night in net.

Taylor finished with 19 of her 36 saves in the final frame with the lone tally for Archbishop Williams coming on a shot for eighth grader Cam Katapodis at the 5:08 mark of the third.

“All eight of our seniors worked hard these past four years,” said Taylor. “So our goal, going into this year is we wanted to make it to the Final Four which we’ve never done and we had so much momentum and confidence going into this.”

Up Next, HPNA will play top-seeded Hingham in the Div. 1 state semifinals this weekend.
