State probation workers monitoring the GPS bracelet tracking defendant Bradley Rein on Friday night received an alert that the device had lost power. They apparently attempted to contact him by phone several times and left six voicemails, but were unable to reach him.

Hingham Police got an arrest warrant and apprehended Rein that day.

Rein, of Hingham, was indicted by a Plymouth grand jury in March on 24 charges relating to the Nov. 21, 2022, crash: second-degree murder, motor vehicle homicide by reckless operation, 18 counts of aggravated assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, and four counts of assault and battery with a dangerous weapon.

Further details of why and how the bracelet monitoring Rein — or where he disappeared to — were not immediately available. A clerk at Plymouth Superior Court told the Herald the office did not have a copy of any police report related to the incident.

But what happened bought Rein an evaluation by a court clinician during a bail revocation hearing at Plymouth Superior Court on Wednesday. Following that evaluation, Judge William Sullivan ordered that Rein be committed to a 20-day stay at a state Department of Mental Health facility for further evaluation.

Hingham Police responded to the Apple Store at Derby Shops that November morning and found the plate-glass storefront shattered. Further inside, store employees and bystanders were doing what they could to help the 22 injured people.

But one person, 65-year-old Kevin Bradley, of Wayne, N.J., could not be saved. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police say Rein was the driver of the 2019 Toyota 4Runner which had crashed into the store. He allegedly told police that his foot had gotten stuck on the gas pedal as he drove through the area to pick up new glasses.

Rein had no prior criminal record in Massachusetts but has an expunged DUI charge from a 2020 Vermont arrest.
