Longtime athletic director Barry Haley passed away Saturday morning after a short illness. A former athletic director at several schools, most recently at Wakefield and Concord-Carlisle, Haley spent 12 years at Concord-Carlisle before retiring in the spring of 2018.
“I enjoy the position that I’m in and I really love working with the students, coaches and Concord-Carlisle communities but I’ve reached the point in my life, that at the end of next June, I will have been in various school positions for 41 years, 31 years as a high athletic director.” Haley said at the time of his retirement. “As they say, it’s time.”
Haley was a fixture at the MIAA, serving as tournament director in football, ice hockey and boys lacrosse. He also served on the Massachusetts Secondary School Athletic Directors Association (MSSDA) executive board and served as that organization’s president in 1997.
“Barry was a great mentor to all of us,” said Lowell athletic director David Lezenski. “More importantly he was a wonderful family man, he was so proud of his children and wife. We lost a giant in the world of athletic administration today. Today is a sad, sad day.”
