Either way, the 37th U.S. Women’s Mid-Amateur Championship trophy was heading south. With superior play, Czech Republic native Hana Ryskova captured the title at Brae Burn Country Club in Newton.
No. 6 seed Ryskova defeated No. 12 seed Lindsay Gahm in the 18-hole final, 5-and-4, capping five grueling rounds of match play.
Ryskova recently completed her college golf career at the University of Louisville, while Gahm is a lifelong Louisville resident. The 25-year-old Ryskova took the lead for good by winning the par-3 sixth hole. Then she really took flight, winning four of the next five holes to take control.
Ryskova birdied all three par 5s on the incoming nine to pull away. Ryskova becomes the first golfer from the Czech Republic, also known as Czechia, to capture a USGA championship.
