NextImg:Hamilton’s leadoff homer sets stage for 3-2 Red Sox road win over Mets

In a game that was neither televised nor broadcast on the radio, the Red Sox triumphed over the New York Mets 3-2 on Thursday afternoon.

Sean Newcomb earned the win with his scoreless three-inning start. He held the Mets to one hit, walked one, and struck out five, including his last two batters, Francisco Lindor and Brandon Nimmo. Facing 11 batters, Newcomb threw 34 of his 50 pitches for strikes.

Greg Weissert, Isaiah Campbell, and Brennan Bernardino followed with an inning apiece, and Noah Davis pitched the final three frames. Weissert bookended the fourth inning with a pair of swinging strikeouts to extend his streak of scoreless outings to six. Likewise for Bernardino, who’s yet to allow a run over five preseason appearances.

It was a quiet day at the plate overall, with the Mets narrowly out-hitting their guests 6-5, but David Hamilton’s first-pitch leadoff home run gave Boston an immediate lead, which never relinquished. He also led off the fifth inning with a double; he’s hitting .273 with a .945 OPS this spring.

In the following frame, Abraham Toro’s RBI-double plated second Red Sox run, scoring Vaughn Grissom, who’d reached on an error. No more runs crossed the plate until the top of the eighth, when Romy Gonzalez stole third and scored on a throwing error by catcher Chris Williams.

Boston had several opportunities to add on, including six walks, but they went 0-for-7 with runners in scoring position and left eight men on base. Gonzalez and Hamilton, two players trying to secure spots on the Opening Day roster, had their only multi-hit performances.

The Mets got on the board in the bottom of the eighth, scoring two on Nick Roselli’s line-drive single off Davis and an error by outfielder Phillip Sikes, including former Red Sox minor leaguer Joey Meneses.

The Red Sox are 10-7 in Grapefruit League play.
