If you’re planning to join the estimated 50.7 million Americans taking a road trip for the Fourth of July holiday, less of your travel budget will go out your tailpipe compared to last year, according to the latest data from AAA.
As of Thursday, the national price per gallon for regular unleaded gas was $3.549, down 27.3% from a year ago, when it was $4.881.
You may have to take less cash, but a lot more patience for your travels: the AAA predicts that holiday travel this year will break the record 49 million trips taken in 2019. About 48.6 million people took to the roads for a trip of at least 50 miles last year.
The highest prices nationwide are currently in Washington ($4.987), California ($4.827), and Hawaii ($4.727). Last year at this time, the Californians were paying $6.308 to take the 405 to the 118 to Madera Rd. to get to Simi Valley, the highest prices ever recorded. The current price — while still high — is 23.4% lower.
The map below shows the latest prices throughout the country. The figures are taken from AAA’s daily surveys.
