Five Massachusetts schools, including one in Boston, have been recognized by U.S. Secretary of Education Miguel Cardona as “blue ribbon” schools for excellent academic performance.

The schools include Winship Elementary School in Brighton, Northfield Elementary School in Northfield, Josiah Haynes Elementary School in Sudbury, John D. Hardy Elementary School in Wellesley and Weston Middle School in Weston.

Up to 420 schools may be nominated each year. This year, 325 schools across the nation earned the recognition.

National Blue Ribbon schools are among their state’s highest performing schools academically, or are among their state’s highest performing schools in closing achievement gaps.

“This year’s cohort of honorees demonstrates what is possible when committed educators and school leaders create vibrant, welcoming, and affirming school cultures where rich teaching and learning can flourish,” said Cardona in a statement.

The blue ribbon award is in its 39th year and affirms the hard work of educators, families and communities in creating safe and welcoming schools.

Cardona said, “I commend all our Blue Ribbon honorees for working to keep students healthy and safe while meeting their academic, social, emotional, and mental health needs. In the face of unprecedented circumstances, you found creative ways to engage, care for, protect, and teach our children.”
