The Patriots will have a new left tackle in 2024.
Trent Brown is signing a 1-year, free-agent deal with the Bengals, according to the NFL Network.
Brown started eight of 11 games for the Patriots last year, a season marred by injury and inconsistent effort. The 30-year-old was not expected to return to the Patriots, who re-signed right tackle Mike Onwenu and added ex-Steelers offensive tackle Chukwuma Okorafor earlier this offseason. Brown spent the last three years in New England, after originally joining the organization via trade in 2018.
The 6-foot-8, 380-pounder is among the most talented offensive tackles in the league, and played at a Pro Bowl level for the first half of last season. But after suffering ankle and knee injuries in late October, Brown was never the same, and reports surfaced about him being perpetually late to meetings. The Patriots eventually benched him for the final two games of the 2023 season, shortly after Brown said in the team locker room he planned to play elsewhere next season.
The Patriots’ remaining tackles are Onwenu, Okorafor, Calvin Anderson, Vederian Lowe, Conor McDermott, Tyron Wheatley Jr. and Andrew Stueber. The front office is expected to add to the position in next month’s draft.
