Former Patriots cornerback Malcolm Butler announced his retirement over the weekend during an event in Houston.

“I am retired,” Butler said, via NFL reporter Aaron Wilson. “I did the best I can do. Walking away from the game feeling comfortable. Everybody can do more, but I’m satisfied with my career. It’s time to move on and transition.”

Butler hadn’t appeared in an NFL game since 2020, but attempted comebacks with the Cardinals and Patriots in 2021 and 2022, respectively. He will be best remembered for snatching a game-saving, goal-line interception at the end of Super Bowl XLIX and getting benched during a Super Bowl LII loss to the Eagles. Butler entered the league as an undrafted rookie in 2014.

Shortly after rejoining the team in 2022, Butler revealed he and Belichick spoke about his benching versus the Eagles, but declined to offer any specifics.

“You can’t think about the past all the time. So I’ve moved forward from that,” he said. “I know it’ll always be there, but I haven’t said anything to anybody about anything. So you’re going to have keep doing your research or whatever you gotta do, because I’m here for the Patriots and I’m here to be peaceful.”
