A former Mass General Hospital medical assistant has been found guilty of sexually assaulting patients, according to the Suffolk DA’s office.
A jury on Monday found 41-year-old Damien Knighton guilty of six counts of indecent assault and battery on a person over 14.
The East Boston man had been charged with sexually assaulting four victims during his time as a medical assistant at a Mass General Hospital health care center at 388 Commonwealth Ave.
“These incidents were egregious personal and ethical violations in a place of treatment and trust, and I thank the jury for recognizing them for what they were,” Suffolk DA Kevin Hayden said in a statement.
“I am grateful for the victims who bravely recounted Damien Knighton’s actions, and I thank the prosecutor, victim witness advocate and police investigators for their diligent work in bringing this defendant to justice,” the DA added.
Back in January of 2023, Boston police officers responded to MGH Back Bay Health Center after a victim reported that he came in to see his doctor for a follow-up appointment regarding an injury to his shoulder and leg.
The victim said he was approached by Knighton, who said the doctor requested another test. Before the test, Knighton asked the victim to remove his clothes and told the victim he would be examining his penis and testicles.
Knighton then moved the victim’s penis side to side, touched his testicles, and asked if blood was rushing to his penis. Knighton then inserted his finger into the victim’s rectum.
The medical assistant asked the victim to turn around and repeated the insertion for a second time. The victim then got dressed and asked other staff about the exam. He concluded that he was sexually assaulted and called 911.
Then other victims came forward after news reports of Knighton’s arrest.
Another patient said he was taken to an exam room, where Knighton instructed him to remove his underwear in order to check his skin. The patient said Knighton examined his genitals, then left the room.
After seeing his doctor, the patient was approached by Knighton, who asked if the doctor had performed a rectal exam. The patient said no. Knighton then led the patient back into an exam room and performed a rectal exam.
Knighton will be sentenced on March 14.
