Less than two years after his exit from Boston, Marcus Smart is on the move again.
The Memphis Grizzlies on Thursday traded the former Celtics point guard and a 2025 first-round draft pick to the Washington Wizards for two second-round picks, ESPN’s Shams Charania reported.
Memphis acquired Smart in June 2023 as part of a three-team deal that sent Kristaps Porzingis to Boston. That trade worked out wonderfully for the Celtics — Porzingis immediately became a key player for a Boston team that went on to win the NBA championship — but Smart’s brief Grizzlies tenure was derailed by injuries.
The 2021-22 NBA Defensive Player of the Year appeared in just 39 of a possible 133 games over his one-and-a-half seasons in Memphis. He came off the bench in 13 of his 19 appearances this season, averaging a career-low 21.1 minutes per game.
From a competitive standpoint, the move to Washington is an unfortunate one for Smart, a 2014 first-round pick who played his first nine seasons in Boston. While the Grizzlies are an NBA Finals contender, entering Thursday with the second-best record in the Western Conference, the Wizards are in full tank mode, focused on improving their odds of landing projected No. 1 overall draft pick Cooper Flagg.
Washington’s 9-41 record is the NBA’s worst, and it traded away two of its few established veterans earlier in the week, sending Kyle Kuzma to Milwaukee and Jonas Valanciunas to Sacramento. The Wizards got back longtime Buck Khris Middleton in the Kuzma deal.
The Wizards are scheduled to visit the Celtics on April 6. Smart played 19 minutes in his first game back at TD Garden on Nov. 19, finishing with three points on 1-of-11 shooting.
