Unionized workers at Encore Boston Harbor struck a “tentative agreement” Wednesday with casino management on a new contract, likely averting a strike scheduled to begin Friday where more than 1,000 workers could have walked off the job.
UNITE HERE Local 26 and Teamsters Local 25 reached an agreement with Wynn Resorts after an “hours-long” bargaining session, according to a statement released Thursday morning. The unions said they were suspending their strike deadline of Friday at midnight, which they approved last week after more than 1,000 workers cast ballots.
UNITE HERE Local 26 President Carlos Aramayo said management at Encore showed “leadership in the hospitality industry” for bargaining a contract that “guarantees workers at the resort will have excellent wages and benefits.”
“We are glad that a strike will be avoided and that a spirit of partnership has prevailed. Our members are excited to continue providing five-star service to the resort’s guests with a five-star contract,” Aramayo said in a statement.
The union said more details about the contract would be made public after a ratification vote on Friday.
“But the agreement achieves all of the union’s goals for a five-star contract, with five-star wages, excellent benefits, and job security. It meets and even exceeds the union standard in the hospitality industry,” the union said in its statement.
The two unions cover more than 1,400 workers at the casino — from room attendants to cocktail servers and delivery drivers to bar porters. The casino is owned by Las Vegas-based Wynn Resorts, which also has properties in Sin City and Macau.
The unions’ first contract expired in April and the two sides have been negotiating an agreement since the spring. Union leaders threatened last week to man a picket line “24 hours a day, seven days a week” if a deal could not be reached in time.
But cooler heads prevailed.
Encore Boston Harbor said the casino was “very pleased” it reached an agreement with both unions “that fulfills our company’s goal of providing outstanding benefits and overall compensation, among the highest for our industry in the state of Massachusetts.”
“Our achievement of this goal reflects our commitment to ensuring Encore Boston Harbor is one of the region’s best places to work,” the casino said in a statement. “We look forward to ratification of our agreement soon.”
