Common sense has been lacking in our Blue State for too long.
It’s omnipresent in the illegal immigrant debate, so here’s a dose of reality: The ICE sweeps that kicked off last week in the Boston area targeted criminals — bad guys you don’t want living next to you. The pundits who say otherwise are hypocrites.
The Herald found out yesterday one of those targeted by ICE was an illegal Dominican who beat his wife so badly that she died. She was one-month pregnant and her 5-year-old boy witnessed it all. That’s what the Massachusetts Parole Board wrote and they still set him free.
The Essex DA added the convict was drunk and high on cocaine when he went on his “heinous, fatal beating.”
But, they delayed his release until this past Friday when Immigration and Customs Enforcement could pick him up at MCI-Norfolk prison. That’s according to the Executive Office of Public Safety.
Massachusetts taxpayers paid for his incarceration for 17 short years, feeding him and attempting to rehabilitate him, according to the Parole Board, so why not send him home?
You can agree or disagree with his parole (we disagree), but why allow him to stay in Massachusetts? This is exactly what ICE is doing.
If you are here illegally and you, for instance, hole up in a migrant motel with an AR-15 and nearly five kilos of fentanyl with an estimated street value of $1 million you should face deportation. This suspect, Leonardo Andujar Sanchez, 28, does have an ICE detainer stamped on his case.
It’s common sense.
Then there’s the Haitian gang member grabbed in an ICE sweep last week who is being deported back to his island country. He went on a crime spree starting in August 2022 and ending last August, being arrested, charged and convicted 17 times.
He does not belong in the United States!
We agree with Boston Mayor Michelle Wu that living in Boston needs to be safe. Choosing, however, to not enforce immigration law is faulty logic. An illegal immigrant criminal is violating everything we stand for. Saying ICE sweeps “stoke fear” is missing the point.
The ICE sweeps that have extended to Los Angeles and Chicago is exactly what was missing during the Biden administration.
Gang members, drug traffickers, wife beaters, rapists, pimps and the rest need to leave. ICE is doing what every law-abiding citizen wants them to do and actually needs them to do.
When the Haitian gang member was busted last week, a neighbor shouted out a “Thank You!”
That’s what is playing out across the country. The immigration system is broken. It’s time to fix it.
