NextImg:Editorial: Elizabeth Warren, Maura Healey hitting the road for Biden

Politicians are fond of saying that they were elected to do the “peoples’ business.”

The question is, just what people are we talking about?

Massachusetts Sen. Elizabeth Warren and Gov. Maura Healey are ostensibly in office working for Bay Staters. But the Democratic lawmakers just got a side hustle: making the campaign rounds for Pres. Joe Biden as he seeks re-election.

This goes well beyond endorsements. As The Hill reported, the Biden-Harris 2024 campaign on Wednesday announced its national advisory board, which will be chaired by former Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) and include, among others, Sens. Elizabeth Warren and Cory Booker (D-N.J.).

Also in the mix of 50 Democrats, Gov. Healey.

The Supersized Squad is expected to act as surrogates for the campaign, fundraise and traverse the country to boost President Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris.

The board will “participate in regular media interviews, assist with fundraising efforts and events, leverage their networks and platforms to amplify the campaign’s message to voters, and engage directly with voters through grassroots efforts and events in key battleground states,” according to the campaign.

And on whose time and dime will all this be happening?

Warren and Healey have full plates already – Massachusetts is sizeable, as are issues needing to be addressed here. It’s a bit hard to give the state one’s full focus when you’re ginning up interest in the “No Malarkey 2.0 Tour” in Arizona or Michigan.

Massachusetts taxpayers pay the salaries of Warren and Healey with the understanding that they’re doing our “peoples’ business,” not stumping for the president.

Healey’s already been leaving the “out of office, back soon” sign on the door. Earlier this month, it was reported that the governor left the state for her second trip to Washington, D.C., in the span of a few days.

Her plans included attending the Select USA Investment Summit, according to her office, and then speaking on a panel about economic prosperity and job creation and meeting with “several foreign dignitaries” before heading back home.

Lt. Gov. Kim Driscoll served as acting governor in her stead. With Healey’s new gig, we might be seeing a lot more of Driscoll in the months to come.

Warren, who insisted she wasn’t running for president when she was re-elected to the Senate in 2018, took heat for her about-face and subsequent 2020 campaign for the White House. She’s up for re-election again, and this time she can honestly say she’s not making a bid for the presidency. At least, not for herself.

Biden and Co. picked this board with care, apparently. As spokesperson Kevin Munoz said in a statement,  “They are representative of the broad, diverse coalition of voters who came together in 2020 to deliver President Biden and Vice President Harris a historic victory, and we are so grateful for their dedication to help this campaign prevail over the MAGA extremist agenda and help President Biden finish the job for the American people.”

It would be great if they could first do their jobs for the people of Massachusetts.
