The Easthampton School Committee is set to meet for the first time after viral news broke that a superintendent candidate had lost his job offer after he called the committee chair and her assistant “ladies” in an email.
The School Committee is scheduled to meet Monday evening to discuss the superintendent search, and to potentially vote on the next leader for the western Massachusetts school district.
This meeting comes in the wake of the saga involving superintendent candidate Vito Perrone, the interim superintendent of West Springfield Public Schools, who used the term “ladies” in an email to School Committee Chairperson Cynthia Kwiecinski and her assistant.
Following that email, Perrone’s job offer was rescinded — and he was told in a private executive session meeting that he lost the offer because of how he addressed the women in the email.
Since then, supporters of Perrone held a rally for him. The School Committee had a meeting scheduled for last week, but it had to be canceled after hundreds of people tried to log into the Zoom.
During Monday’s scheduled Zoom meeting, many members of the public are expected to talk about the situation involving Perrone. There will be a 3-minute time limit for people who want to talk, and the “public speak” portion of the meeting can last up to 90 minutes.
“Superintendent candidate discussion and/or potential vote on whether or not to continue negotiations with the candidate,” a meeting agenda item reads.
“Superintendent Search discussion and/or potential vote on a candidate to be the next superintendent,” reads another agenda item.
Kwiecinski, who rescinded the job offer to Perrone, has broken her silence, offering advice to the next finalist: Be more professional.
Speaking out for the first time in the wake of her committee becoming a point of controversy, Kwiecinski told the Daily Hampshire Gazette she felt insulted for being called a lady, “a familiarity that he had not earned.”
