Police have nabbed an alleged apartment scammer who’s accused of stealing more than $30,000 from potential tenants who wanted to rent in East Boston.
Timothy Andreev, 40, of Mashpee, has been arrested on eight outstanding warrants for larceny by scheme, according to Boston Police.
This arrest stems from eight reports of apartment fraud in Eastie over the last month, police said.
The alleged victims told police that they were looking for an apartment to rent in East Boston using Facebook Messenger, and they contacted Andreev who was showing the apartment.
He’s accused of showing the residence, and then the alleged victim would send him a deposit to secure the apartment. Andreev promised the person that they would receive the keys at a later date.
Afterwards, Andreev would not return any of the victims’ calls and would block the victims, police said.
Andreev received a total of $32,000 over the past month, according to police. As a result of the investigation, detectives sought eight warrants out of East Boston District Court for larceny by scheme.
Police found him in Mashpee on Wednesday, and placed him under arrest without incident.
Following his arrest, police issued a list of tips for people to avoid being scammed:
Boston Police added, “If you find yourself the target or victim of a rental scam, stop all contact immediately, and if you have already sent money, it is extremely important to report any transfer of funds to your financial institution and file a report with the Boston Police Department.”
