A drunk driver from New York City killed a grandfather and grandson when he allegedly drove the wrong way and struck their vehicle on a Somerset bridge late Christmas night, according to Massachusetts State Police.
A third individual who had been in the vehicle, a 2014 Infiniti QX50 SUV, at the time of the crash, is in critical condition, while a driver and passenger of another car that was struck suffered injuries authorities considered not life-threatening.
Troopers from the State Police-Dartmouth Barracks responded to the crash on the westbound side of Veterans Memorial Bridge, part of Route 6, at 11:10 p.m. Monday.
Initial investigation findings indicate the wrong-way driver, identified as Adam M. Gauthier, 41, of New York City, was driving a 2023 Land Rover SUV easterly on the westbound side when he allegedly struck the Infiniti and a 2019 Honda Accord.
All six individuals involved in the crash, including Gauthier, were rushed to area hospitals, Massachusetts State Police said in a release Tuesday afternoon.
The driver of the Infiniti, identified as 73-year-old Floriano Arruda, and his grandson, 15-year-old Jacoby Arruda, who had been in the rear passenger seat, have died from their injuries, according to the Bristol County District Attorney’s Office.
The front seat passenger, identified as Floriano’s wife and Jacoby’s grandmother, Donna Arruda, 68, suffered serious injuries and is in critical condition, according to officials.
All three lived in Seekonk, the Bristol DA’s office said.
Gauthier has been charged with motor vehicle homicide while under the influence, manslaughter, OUI-Liquor Causing Serious Bodily Injury; Reckless Operation of a Motor Vehicle; and Wrong-Way Operation on a State Highway.
The suspect is expected to be arraigned Tuesday afternoon, appearing from a hospital bed at St. Luke’s Hospital in New Bedford, where he is being treated for injuries considered not life-threatening.
The Bristol DA’s Office is prosecuting the case.
Both westbound lanes of Veterans Memorial Bridge were closed for four hours after the crash.
The driver and passenger of the Honda, both young adult women from Taunton, were treated for injuries considered not life-threatening.
The investigation of the facts and circumstances of the crash is being conducted by State Police-Dartmouth Barracks, State Police Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Section, State Police Crime Scene Services Section, and State Police Detective Unit for Bristol County.
