NextImg:Drake Maye won’t blame wind, Patriots receivers for game-clinching interception

Patriots rookie quarterback Drake Maye didn’t make any excuses for the interception he threw in the final play of Sunday’s loss to the Titans.

The rookie quarterback wouldn’t blame the wind or wide receiver Kendrick Bourne falling down, which brought safety Amani Hooker, who ended up intercepting the pass, over to Boutte’s side of the field.

“I think, KB (Bourne), it’s hard to kind of predict that. Maybe it could have held the safety a little more. But I think I still — I think my wind answer, what I said last night was kind of off of reaction. I don’t think wind — with the quarterback, and I don’t think it played that big a factor. So really, I think I just underthrew it,” Maye said on the “WEEI Afternoon Show.” “I got to put it out there more for Boutte and let him go make a play. So really, I think this is my decision-making. And maybe sometimes may throw it away, throw it away there. Or, if not, from our opposite 40, may try to throw in the end zone and have Boutte maybe try to catch over the shoulder. I don’t think wind ended up being that big a deal. I think it was more just my reaction off the game to make myself feel better.”

Maye also believes he could have ended his viral 11.8-second play to send the game into overtime earlier.

“I think I missed Hunter (Henry) pry in the first second or two in the back end zone on the end line,” Maye said. “I think I could have had that play over a lot faster.”

Maye was one of the few bright spots in Sunday’s loss as the Patriots’ only form of offense. He passed and rushed for a combined 301 yards. The Patriots only had 295 total net yards in the game, accounting for loss of yards due to penalties.
