NextImg:Division 2 swimming: Wellesley girls get 5th straight title

Tracy Peng, Serena Loo, Audrey Sau and Alexandra Loo delivered a victory in the 200-yard medley relay (1:53.95) to open the evening and never looked back as Wellesley captured its fifth straight Div. 2 girls swimming championship, and 10th overall with 384 points as a team as Boston University.

“It’s a school that is committed to swimming and diving,” said Wellesley coach Doug Curtin. “We have a great facility, but also a really good program. As much as we shine at state meets and things like that, we’ve built a really good culture.”

After starting off hot in the relay, Wellesley piled up depth points as sophomore Sonja Tellander placed third in the 200 freestyle (1:58.06). Then, Serena Loo took third in the 200 IM (2:13.81), as the Raiders built a lead on the field.

“I had really good competition this meet,” said Serena Loo. “It was really good, having people of similar speed swimming next to me. It really pushed me to go my fastest.”

Only a freshman, Serena Loo also won the 100 breaststroke (1:07.29). Sarah Ginsberg finished second in the diving competition with 394.10 points. Wellesley won just two races as a group, but placed top-five in all 12 possible events.

Jackson Wagner propelled Milton to the boys’ title, setting meet records in the 50 freestyle (21.60 seconds) and the 100 butterfly (52.12) individually. He also teamed up with Ryan Kelly, Colby Moskos and Malachi Buchanan to shatter another meet record in the 200 relay (1:43), as the Wildcats topped the field with 248 team points.

Other individual standouts included North Andover’s Isla Amuan, a quadruple-winner who placed first in both the girls’ 50 (24.54) and 100 freestyle (53.46). Her teammate and fellow sophomore Noor Abedal also won the 200 (1:58.06) and 500 freestyles (5:12.41). Then, the duo also combined with Natasha Secan and Juliette Bene to power the Scarlet Knights to victories in the 200 (1:42.01) and 500 freestyle (3:42.57) relays.

Mackenzie Gibbons led Notre Dame (Tyngsboro) to wins in the girls’ 100 backstroke (57.64), and the 100 butterfly (57.18).

“We didn’t have a great sectional meet (last week), even though we won,” Curtin said. “A lot of the girls weren’t thrilled with it. Today, and this week, we focused on good vibes, positive energy and keeping the spirits up. For some of them, it’s their first (state) meet. For some of them, it’s their first time winning four in a row. Everybody has a first something, and we had a blast. Tons of lifetime bests.”
