NextImg:Devin McCourty believes Patriots are happy Matt Patricia ‘experiment is over’

If the Patriots are going to be a better team in 2023 than they were last season, it will likely come down to offensive coaching.

Head coach Bill Belichick made a much more traditional choice to run the team’s offense by hiring Bill O’Brien as offensive coordinator/quarterbacks coach and Adrian Klemm as offensive line coach. They replace Matt Patricia, who was offensive line coach/play caller and Joe Judge, who served as the team’s quarterbacks coach.

Patricia is now a senior defensive assistant with the Eagles — whom the Patriots play on Sunday — while Judge is working with the Pats’ special teams as an assistant head coach.

Retired Patriots former captain/safety Devin McCourty is happy to see someone else running the offense this season.

“I said it. I’ve said it this whole offseason: That wasn’t a good thing,” McCourty said on WEEI’s “The Greg Hill Show” on Wednesday. “There was nothing good about that. I think a lot of people talk about the season, but from training camp there was nothing good about that.

“He’s a really good football coach, he’s a defensive mind,” McCourty continued. “That’s what he’s is and that’s what made his living on in the NFL. But yeah, I think everybody in New England — and I think even Matty P — is happy that whole experiment is over.”

The Patriots ranked 24th last season in expected points added (EPA) per play on offense, and they were 25th in success rate. To put that into better context, the team ranked 10th in EPA per play and fourth in success rate in 2021 with Josh McDaniels as offensive coordinator. Even in 2020, the year Cam Newton ran the offense, the Patriots were more efficient, ranking 22nd in EPA per play and 14th in success rate.

Expect the Patriots to improve on offense this season with O’Brien running the show. The question is by how much?
