FOXBORO — Eight members of the New England Patriots’ 90-man roster were not in uniform for Thursday night’s preseason opener.
Wide receivers DeMario Douglas and Kendrick Bourne, safety Marte Mapu, linebacker Sione Takitaki, safety Joshuah Bledsoe, cornerback Marcus Jones, guard Cole Strange and defensive tackle Christian Barmore all did not dress against the Carolina Panthers at Gillette Stadium.
Bourne, Takitaki and Strange are on the physically unable to perform list and have yet to practice this summer. Barmore has not taken the field since being diagnosed with blood clots last month. Douglas, Jones, Mapu and Bledsoe all have battled injuries, with Douglas practicing in a red non-contact jersey of late.
Notable players who did suit up Thursday included projected starting offensive tackle Chukwuma Okorafor, who sat out the last several practices with an undisclosed injury. Edge rusher Matthew Judon also was in uniform amid his highly publicized contract dispute.
Head coach Jerod Mayo said this week that he planned to give all of the Patriots’ healthy players — including quarterbacks Jacoby Brissett, Drake Maye, Bailey Zappe and Joe Milton III — playing time against Carolina, but several regulars looked during warmups like they did expect to play. That group included Judon, veteran cornerback Jonathan Jones and tight end Hunter Henry.
The Panthers chose to play only backups to open their preseason. Carolina announced a total of 33 inactives, including nearly every player who is listed as a starter on the team’s depth chart. Quarterbacks Bryce Young and Andy Dalton both sat, setting up Jake Luton and Jack Plummer to split reps behind center for last year’s NFL cellar-dwellers.
