The first Boston murder victim of 2024 has been identified as Nilton Fernandes, 24, of Dorchester.

Boston Police responded to the area of 34 High St. in Dorchester a little before 5:30 a.m. Monday, New Year’s Day, for a report of a person shot. Responders pronounced Fernandes, who had clearly been shot, dead at the scene.

Police ask that anyone with any information about Fernandes’ killing to contact homicide detectives at 617-343-4470 or to provide information anonymously through the CrimeStoppers Tip Line at 1-800-494-TIPS (8477) or by texting the word “TIP” to CRIME (27463).

Police also responded Monday night to the area of 27 Washington St. in Roxbury where they found a teenage girl suffering from a non-life-threatening gunshot wound.

She was taken to a local hospital and treated. Her alleged shooter, however, wasn’t far.

Police say that witnesses pointed them toward 20 Castlegate Road. After several tries at the door, three people came out of the target apartment and police identified one of them as their suspect.

Police arrested Avante Young-Dabney, 19, of Dorchester, that night for the girl’s shooting. They charged him with unlawful possession of a firearm, unlawful possession of ammunition, assault and battery by means of a dangerous weapon, discharging a firearm within 500 feet of a dwelling, and armed assault with intent to murder.

The Boston Police Department is searching for 75-year-old Harold Brown of Roxbury.

Brown, who has developmental disabilities, a heart condition, Alzheimer’s disease and autism, was last seen leaving his Walnut Avenue home a little after 3 p.m. on Monday, New Year’s Day.

At the time he left his home, he was wearing a black winter hat, black hooded sweatshirt, a blue and white flannel shirt and black shoes, according to the BPD.

Brown usually uses a walker but may have left it behind. He is known to use the T and often travels to the Natick area, the mall at 330 MLK Blvd. and areas around his home like the benches on Walnut Avenue at Circuit Street and Walnut Avenue at Rockland Street.

Police ask that anyone who has seen him or knows where he may be to contact detectives at (617) 343-4275, or to submit an anonymous tip to the CrimeStoppers Tip Line at 1-800-494-TIPS (8477) or texting the word “TIP” to CRIME (27463).
