NextImg:CO leak in Lawrence sends seven to hospital

Seven Lawrence residents were taken to the hospital yesterday afternoon following a carbon monoxide leak at a home on Canton Street.

When officials arrived to the home, they reported high levels of carbon monoxide and people suffering from dizziness and lightheadedness. Five adults and two children were then taken to the hospital as a precaution, according to police.

Investigators said the leak was caused by a malfunctioning boiler vent.

According to police, the victims did not suffer any major injuries and were expected to return home.

The home is not located in the section of the city that was impacted by the Sept. 13 gas explosions. That part of the city is still undergoing gas restoration efforts that are expected to extend into December.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, over 400 Americans die each year from unintentional carbon monoxide poisoning, more than 20,000 visit the emergency room and over 4,000 are hospitalized.

Carbon monoxide is found in the fumes produced by burning fuel in cars, stoves, lanterns, grills, fireplaces, gas ranges or furnaces.
