NextImg:City proposes new location for displaced Allston-Brighton artists

Following the controversial closure of Sound Museum in Allston last January and months of displacement hopscotch among local artists, the city is proposing a new permanent rehearsal space for community after a developer offered a warehouse in donation.

“This permanent studio rehearsal space is a historic achievement for our Allston-Brighton artist community and citywide goal of preserving and creating new creative spaces in Boston,” Mayor Michelle Wu in a statement announcing the plan.

With the purchase of the Sound Museum at 155 N Beacon St., to be redeveloped into life science lab space, the developer IQHQ also agreed to purchase 290 N Beacon Street as an impact mitigation measure — intended to be gifted to the city and used as long-term accommodation for the displaced artist community.

The BPDA must still conduct a public hearing and vote on the project, to be scheduled for the June board meeting. If the vote passes, the release detailed, the city can move forward with developing the property — now an industrial building in Brighton — into rehearsal space.

The 155 N Beacon St. location was used by over 700 artists, utilizing 40,000 square feet of rehearsal space, the city release said.

The city and community group #ARTSTAYSHERE Coalition previously stepped in to temporarily relocate the over 500 artists in 88 studios at 55 Morrissey Blvd in Dorchester in March.

“It’s been a whirlwind,” Jim Healey, a long-time musician at 155 North Beacon Street who relocated to Dorchester.

“Losing our Brighton workspaces is a huge loss, but the Dorchester spaces are really great. The Record Co. did an amazing job getting them built and open on time. We’re glad the city is taking steps to make our return to Brighton and thank everyone involved.”

Following BPDA approval, the city would begin a community engagement process soliciting proposals for the renovation of the new site in late summer this year, according to Wu’s office. This Request for Proposals process would be “open to all,” the city said, and seek out feedback to “help guide development objectives for the site.”
