Boston City Councilor Tania Fernandes Anderson is expected to appear in federal court for a hearing Monday to plead guilty to two corruption charges related to an alleged kickback scheme.

Fernandes Anderson, 46, has  agreed to plead guilty to one count of wire fraud and one count of theft involving public funds related to a scheme prosecutors say stole thousands of dollars.

In the plea deal, prosecutors agreed to drop four wire fraud charges leveled against Fernandes Anderson when she was federally indicted and arrested last December. The councilor has initially pleaded not guilty to all six charges.

U.S. Attorney Leah Foley has recommended Fernandes Anderson be sentenced to a year and a day in prison followed by three years of supervised release and pay $13,000 in restitution. The councilor may be sentenced at Monday’s hearing or that could be scheduled for a later date.

The charge of wire fraud can carry a sentence up to 20 years in prison and a $250,000 fine, while the sentence for a charge of theft concerning programs receiving federal funds go up to 10 years in prison.

The government has alleged that in May 2023 while she was facing “personal financial difficulty,” Fernandes Anderson gave one of her staff members, a relative, a $13,000 bonus with the understanding that $7,000 would be returned to the councilor. Feds say the two planned the exchange over text and the handoff happened with cash in a City Hall bathroom in June 2023.

Prosecutors have also alleged Fernandes Anderson filed fraudulent tax returns for 2021, 2022, and 2023, including “willfully omitting campaign funds that she used for her own personal enrichment.”

The District 7 councilor, who has represented Roxbury, Dorchester, Fenway and part of the South End since 2022, previously said she would resign her post but has not stated when she plans to do so. Boston City Councilors may be removed from their positions after criminal sentencing.
