FORT MYERS, Fla. — Chris Sale will return to JetBlue Park to face the Red Sox on Saturday when the Atlanta Braves come down to Fort Myers.
Rafael Devers may be among his former teammates waiting for him in the batter’s box.
Devers is expected to make his Grapefruit League debut on Saturday, which has repeatedly been pushed back as the Red Sox slugger works on his swing. Devers did not pick up a bat until January so he could rest his ailing shoulders over the winter, but on Thursday he took the field in a simulated game and looked like his old self, bashing a three-run home run to dead center field.
Trevor Story, who sat out two days earlier this week with back tightness but who also participated in Thursday’s sim game, is also expected to return to the lineup to face his former teammate.
Sale spent seven seasons with the Red Sox between 2017-23, playing an integral role in the club’s 2018 World Series championship before injuries began taking their toll. The big left-hander’s last five seasons in Boston were disrupted by injury, and prior to 2024 Sale was traded with one year remaining on his contract to the Braves in exchange for infielder Vaughn Grissom.
That trade wound up going poorly for Boston. Sale finally stayed healthy and rediscovered his old dominance, winning his first career Cy Young Award after going 18-3 with a 2.38 ERA and 225 strikeouts over 177.2 innings. Grissom, meanwhile, battled through injury the entire season and made minimal impact after arriving as the presumed starter at second base. He is now battling with David Hamilton and top prospect Kristian Campbell for that job.
Quinn Priester is scheduled to start for Boston, with Liam Hendriks, Justin Wilson, Garrett Whitlock, Justin Slaten and Bryan Mata scheduled to come out of the bullpen. First pitch is scheduled for 1:05 p.m. and the game will be broadcast on NESN, NESN 360 and WEEI 93.7 FM.
