CHELMSFORD — As Chelmsford asserts itself as a true Division 1 baseball contender, it continues to pile up statement wins.

Matthew Hall hit a walkoff RBI single as Chelmsford overcame an early 2-0 run deficit and defeated Central Catholic, 3-2, on Wednesday afternoon at Ayotte Field.

The win gives the Lions (9-2, 7-2) notable victories over North Andover, St. John’s Prep, BC High and Central.

“I am very happy with the way we competed and the grit we showed,” Chelmsford coach Lou Distasi said. “It was symbolic of the way our starting pitcher today Caleb Stuart has fought back from injury over the last year.”

Stuart went six innings, allowing just the two runs on four hits to go with eight strikeouts.

Central Catholic (8-2) led 2-0 midway through and seemed to be in good position with Frankie Melendez keeping the Lions hitless to go with six strikeouts.

Chelmsford, however, came crawling back in the fourth as a misplayed fly ball and two singles loaded the bases with one out. After a sacrifice fly got the Lions on the board, Jack Keyo slapped an RBI single to tie the game, 2-2.

Stuart, meanwhile, held the the Raiders without a hit over his final four innings. After Cole Pelkey pitched a spotless seventh, Chelmsford took advantage of its chance to walk it off in the bottom half.

Two singles and a walk loaded the bases and on the first pitch he saw, Hall grounded a base hit towards second to send the home team into a frenzy.

“This is a great win,” Distasti said. “It’s great to see a team rally around a pitcher who threw as well as Caleb did.”

Central Catholic got on the board in the top of the first. After Stuart quickly set aside the first two hitters, Nate Kearney walked and Brady Rickenbach singled to put runners on the corners. The Raiders then successfully executed a double steal to bring home Kearney and go in front, 1-0.

One inning later the Raiders doubled their lead as Tyler Normandie and Jake Bartlett opened the frame with consecutive hits and two batters later Jeremy Delacruz grounded an RBI single to left to stretch the visitors’ lead to 2-0.
