Charlestown left little doubt as to the identity of the top boys basketball team in Boston.

Jaylin Williams-Crawford piled up 27 points, 13 rebounds and five steals as the Townies went on a 21-4 run the final five minutes to beat rival Burke, 72-56, and claim the Boston City League title on Thursday afternoon at Madison Park.

Williams-Crawford was named the tournament’s most valuable player for his efforts. Teammate and fellow star Jaylen Hunter-Coleman scored 22 points, 21 of which came in the second half.

“We just had to fight,” Charlestown coach Hugh Coleman said. “It was fitting that in the city championship that when we needed everyone the most, everyone stepped up.”

A basket by Jaeden Roberts gave Burke a 52-51 lead with 5:05 left, but from then it was all Charlestown.  After a made free throw, Hunter-Coleman went coast to coast to put the Townies up a bucket. Ahead 56-54 with 2:50 left, Jordany Mak drilled a triple to give the Townies a five-point lead.

Williams-Crawford followed up with a tip-in and Hunter-Coleman scored six straight to give Charlestown a 67-56 advantage with less than 1:30 remaining.

“It means to do this,” Hunter-Coleman said. “Last year we played Burke and lost, and it really took a toll on me. For us to come back a year later and beat them, it’s special.”

Courtesy of six points from Jaeshawn Rogers, the Bulldogs bilt an early 12-1 lead. With Hunter-Coleman on the bench with three fouls, the Bulldogs lead got up to 21-6 early in the second quarter. Charlestown, however, chipped away before halftime with Dwayne Cannon-Lewis drilling a three-pointer and Williams-Crawford connecting at the rim twice to cut the deficit to 31-22 at the half.

Burke maintained a nine-point lead, 44-35, late into the third quarter. Hunter-Coleman drilled a corner three-pointer, went to the basket for two, and Williams-Crawford splashed a top of the key triple to put the Townies up 46-45 heading into the final quarter.

The city championship is the first for Charlestown since 2011.
