LAWRENCE — One of New England’s top quarterbacks is officially off the board.

Surrounded by friends and family, Central Catholic sophomore quarterback Blake Hebert announced his verbal commitment to Clemson University on Friday morning at the high school.

Hebert’s commitment caps off a rigorous few weeks that saw the Boxford resident pick up notable offers from Connecticut, Boston College, Auburn and Clemson.

“It was just all about the feeling I had when I was there,” Hebert said. “I had a blast visiting with the coaching staff and the campus. After I left the feeling of excitement lasted longer. I mean, ‘why not Clemson?’ ”

Central Catholic coach John Sexton has been fielding calls on the Raiders’ signal caller for the better part of two months. The Lawrence school became a revolving door in recent weeks as coaches walked in to meet Hebert and get a look at his size and physicality. At 6-foot-3, 205 pounds, Hebert became of instant interest for those who got the chance to meet him in person.

Throughout May, Hebert showed up well before school to throw with his fellow wide receivers so coaches could get a look at him in action.

“A lot of guys came out in person and wanted to get a look at Blake in action,” Sexton said. “It’s exciting for the program. It’s exciting for him to be courted by these great schools. He’s been putting in a lot of hard work. But it was obvious talking to him after his Clemson visit that his heart was set on them.”

With his commitment behind him and the season just over two months away, Hebert said all the focus is now on ensuring the chemistry between him and his receivers is strongest.

“It’s just about getting the timing down now with my guys,” Hebert said. “That was one of the benefits of the workouts I was doing for the college coaches. It was for recruitment but also allowed me reps with the skill players who I am going to have to be on the same page with.”
