NextImg:Celtics sign journeyman wing after NBA trade deadline

When Brad Stevens said Thursday evening that the Celtics would fill one of their two open roster spots “relatively soon,” he wasn’t kidding.

Two hours later, during the second quarter of Boston’s matchup with the Dallas Mavericks at TD Garden, news broke that the Celtics had signed veteran wing Torrey Craig.

ESPN’s Shams Charania was the first to report the signing, which later was confirmed by Craig’s agency.

Craig was waived by the Chicago Bulls earlier in the week. The Celtics will be the 34-year-old journeyman’s sixth NBA team, and he’ll fill the roster spot previously occupied by guard Jaden Springer, who was traded to Houston on Wednesday.

Dealing Springer was the only move Boston made ahead of Thursday’s NBA trade deadline.

Stevens said in his pregame news conference that adding depth on the wing was Boston’s top post-deadline priority, and Craig fills that need. With 441 career NBA appearances, he’ll give the Celtics an experienced option behind rotation regulars Jayson Tatum, Jaylen Brown and Sam Hauser.

Boston has relied on younger players in that role since the offseason departure of Oshae Brissett, with second-year pro Jordan Walsh, two-way player Drew Peterson and rookie Baylor Scheierman all making occasional cameos.

Craig’s scoring and rebounding numbers are modest (6.0 points, 2.8 rebounds in 19.8 minutes per game), and he’s a career 35.5% 3-point shooter. But he shot better than 39% from deep and each of the last two seasons and was hitting at 42.9% for the Bulls this season, albeit in a small sample size. Injuries limited him to nine games for Chicago, including an ankle sprain that’s sidelined him since Dec. 30.

Craig will join the Celtics and undergo a physical ahead of Saturday’s road game against the New York Knicks, The Athletic’s Jared Weiss reported. The USC Upstate product previously played for Phoenix, Indiana, Milwaukee and Denver and also played professionally in Australia.
