NextImg:Celtics rule out two starters vs. Heat, but get good news on Jayson Tatum

Jaylen Brown joined fellow starter Jrue Holiday on the inactive list ahead of Monday’s road matchup against the Miami Heat.

Brown was ruled out for the game after being added to Boston’s injury report earlier in the day. He initially was listed as questionable with right knee soreness.

Holiday (shoulder) was ruled out for the third consecutive game, leaving Boston without two-fifths of its starting lineup against a new-look Miami squad. New signing Torrey Craig (ankle) was not yet ready to make his Celtics debut, sitting for the second straight game since his arrival late last week.

The Celtics also listed Jayson Tatum (right patellar tendinopathy) as questionable, but he was upgraded to available before tipoff. Tatum scored 40 points Saturday night in a 131-104 rout of the New York Knicks and has missed just three games this season, tied with Derrick White for the fewest among Celtics starters.

Boston has not played a game without Tatum and Brown since last year’s regular-season finale, when head coach Joe Mazzulla sat his starters with playoff seeding already secured.

Monday’s DNP was Brown’s eighth of the season and the 10th for Holiday. Both have dealt with nagging injuries, with Brown previously missing time with hip and shoulder issues. Craig, who was waived by Chicago last week, has not played since Dec. 30.

For Miami, a stomach bug sidelined All-Star Tyler Herro and Jaime Jaquez Jr., both of whom were ruled out due to illness. Andrew Wiggins, Kyle Anderson and Davion Mitchell — the three players the Heat acquired in the deadline trade that sent Jimmy Butler to Golden State — were cleared to debut against Boston.

After returning from South Florida, the Celtics will host the San Antonio Spurs on Wednesday in their final game before the NBA All-Star break.
