Torrey Craig officially is a Celtic, but he’ll watch his first game with Boston from the bench.
The veteran forward will not make his Celtics debut Saturday against the New York Knicks as he continues to recover from an ankle sprain that’s sidelined him since Dec. 30. Boston listed Craig on its injury report with “right ankle return from injury reconditioning.”
The Celtics also ruled out starting guard Jrue Holiday (shoulder) for the second straight game.
Waived by the Chicago Bulls on Monday, Craig signed with the Celtics following Thursday’s NBA trade deadline. The 34-year-old passed his physical and joined his new teammates at Madison Square Garden ahead of Saturday’s Atlantic Division matchup.
Speaking with reporters at MSG, Craig said his ankle was “feeling pretty good” and that he’d be back on the court “hopefully soon.” Once he is healthy enough to return, the eighth-year pro will give Boston an experienced wing option off the bench.
“Just coming in and being the extra guy whenever the team needs it,” Craig told reporters, via CLNS Media. “I think I add to the wing depth of this team, just being another defender, another physical body that you can throw out there and produce.”
Craig has appeared in 441 games with 168 starts since breaking into the NBA in 2017. He also has 75 games of playoff experience, including a run to the NBA Finals with Phoenix in 2021. Craig has played in just nine games this season, however, due to a mix of injuries and lineup decisions. He also missed 29 games last season with knee and foot issues.
The Celtics have three games remaining before the NBA All-Star break. After visiting the Knicks, they’ll play in Miami on Monday and host the San Antonio Spurs on Wednesday before enjoying a week-long layoff.
