Zach Brown’s final high school football act was memorable.

Brown rushed for 174 yards and two second-half touchdowns as Catholic Memorial pulled away from rival BC High for a 50-22 win on Thanksgiving Day at Murphy Family Stadium.

The Knights’ win, coupled with Xaverian’s defeat of previously unbeaten St. John’s Prep, means the Catholic Conference finishes in a three-way tie.

Brown’s standout performance was fitting for the Knights as the senior filled the void left behind by a litany of injured Knights.

“The number of injuries we’ve had was incredible so that just makes it extra rewarding for Zach and the team today,” Catholic Memorial coach John DiBiaso said. “We’d prefer to be playing next week but it’s a good way to end for the seniors.”

After the game was over, DiBiaso presented the game ball to 42-year assistant coach Mike Milo who has been by DiBiaso’s side for each of his 15 Super Bowls.

“(Milo) has meant a lot to the offensive line and the defense,” DiBiaso said. “The kids love him. He’s like a fine wine. He has aged well.”

Catholic Memorial (8-3) held a 15-14 edge at halftime but quickly extended its lead when Brown broke free up the gut for a 77-yard touchdown run. Miguel Watson extended the lead when the linebacker recovered a BC High fumble in the end zone for a touchdown, but Kise Flannery responded with a 10-yard touchdown pass to Conrad Babka to pull the hosts back within 29-22.

The fourth quarter belonged to the Knights. Brown carried the ball on 11 consecutive plays, including a three yard plunge into the end zone, to stretch the lead to 36-22. After the Knights forced a BC High turnover on downs, sophomore quarterback Peter Bourque connected with Isaiah Faublas on a 22-yard touchdown to give Catholic Memorial a commanding three-score lead.

Catholic Memorial held BC High to 17 yards of offense in the final stanza. The win is Catholic Memorial’s eighth consecutive victory over the Eagles dating back to 2017.
