The Cape man who suffered traumatic injuries to his leg and hand from a fireworks explosion is now facing criminal charges for having fireworks in Massachusetts.

On the Fourth of July, West Yarmouth man Phat Truong sustained serious injuries from exploding mortar style fireworks in his yard. The 40-year-old man was transported to a Boston medical facility to get treated for serious, life-threatening injuries.

Now following a police investigation, criminal charges have been filed against Truong for unlawful possession of fireworks.

“All fireworks are illegal in Massachusetts for private residents,” Yarmouth Police said in a statement.

“Massachusetts law prohibits the possession, use, and sale of fireworks by unlicensed individuals, even if you buy them legally in another state,” police added. “Leave fireworks to the professionals.”

The police investigation was conducted by the Yarmouth Police Department, Yarmouth Fire Department, Massachusetts State Police and the State Fire Marshal’s Office.

On the eve of the Fourth of July, Chelsea firefighters responded to a residential fire caused by illegal fireworks. The Mass State Police Bomb Squad was called to secure and dispose of additional fireworks that had been hidden nearby.

The Massachusetts Department of Fire Services posted, “Don’t ruin your summer — or anyone else’s — with a fire, injury, or worse, and don’t risk a day in court and a fine: Leave fireworks to the professionals!”
