The Cape Cod Canal will be closed to all marine traffic for several hours a day this week as workers complete bridge work on the Cape Cod Canal Vertical Lift Railroad Bridge in Bourne.
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, New England District said the bridge work will result in the closure of the Cape Cod Canal to all marine traffic this Monday to Friday, from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. each day.
“For workers to complete the rehabilitation and replacement of critical bridge components, the Railroad Bridge will be lowered each day and the Canal will be closed to all marine traffic when the bridge is being worked on,” the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers said in a statement.
“USACE officials stated the Canal will be re-opened as early as safely possible each work day,” the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers added. “The schedule is weather dependent and the number of days with scheduled closures will be reduced if work progresses faster than predicted.”
USACE safety boats will be stationed at both ends of the Cape Cod Canal to warn approaching vessels.
Meanwhile, the Sagamore Bridge maintenance work has moved onto Phase 3, closing the sidewalk to pedestrians and bicycles.
Phase 2 of the maintenance work had repaired the middle lanes of the bridge, and now Phase 3 work includes repairing the sidewalk. Phase 3 is the final phase of the project this spring.
“Phase 3 includes repairs to both the east side lanes and the sidewalk of the bridge,” the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, New England District tweeted. “The sidewalk will need to be closed to pedestrian and bicycle traffic during Phase 3.
“Pedestrians and cyclists will need to seek alternate routes… We thank you for your patience and cooperation during this critical repair work,” the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers added.
Repair work and lane restrictions are scheduled to run into May, but USACE officials plan to have all bridge work and lane restrictions finished before the start of Memorial Day weekend.
